What do you think of vintage TV?
I’ve been watching a lot of TV LAND, I Love Lucy, Leave It To Beaver, Gunsmoke and etc. Altho these series are very simple and kind of naive and very moralistic, I find them fasintating. I’ve also been watching a lot of daytime movies on a channel called MOVIEPLEX. It shows a lot of old Gene Autrey, Tex Ritter, and Roy Rogers movies. I even saw a movie with John Wayne playing a bit part as a member of a stage robbing gang. He was listed way down on the credits. Anyway, to shorten this post, I find these old series and movies refreshing where crime does not pay, & good always wins out over evil. What is your opinion?
A lot of them are pretty corny. But I hate shows like Law and Order, Judging Amy, and others that make me feel like I being lectured to. I don’t want realism in tv or movies. I want the happy endings. I want the underdog to win. I want good to always triumph over evil.
My life has had more realism in it than I care for. No escaping that…. so why would I want to watch tv where there are no good guys, or things go just plain wrong.
There is an awful lot to be said for the old TV sitcoms and westerns and all. Of course…. I was never too impressed by the old bedroom scenes where the married couple (June and Ward for example) ALWAYS had separate beds. And of course, everyone’s dad was a doctor, who mysteriously never worked late or even worked up a sweat.
There is a very cool movie that is based upon modern highschool kids getting transported into a black and white TV sitcom called Pleasantville. Actors include Jeff Daniels, Mary Steenburgen, and William H. Macy, as well as a pretty young guy who went on to become Spiderman. I think the name of the movie is called Pleasantville. If you haven’t already seen it, I think you’d really like it, especially with your current TVLand pastime.
